Does TE premium actually change tight end value?
A tight end premium moves tight end value less than its reputation suggests. In a 12-team PPR league, adding a half-point tight end reception bonus moves the top ten tight ends by an average of 1.2% in HexValue and 2 places on the overall board. Doubling the bonus to a full point roughly doubles the effect, to 2.4% and 3.3 places. Both are an order of magnitude smaller than what a superflex seat does to quarterbacks.

Every figure on this page is HexValue, the cross-position number HexMetrics assigns a player once it knows a league's shape. Two boards are built from the same 553-player pool for the 2026 season, identical except for the one setting under discussion, and the difference is what you see. Both are 12-team leagues. Percentages are suppressed for players below a HexValue of 5, because a ratio against a player worth almost nothing reports the size of the denominator rather than the size of the change.
I expected a bigger number than this
Worth putting up front, because it is why this piece exists. I like tight ends who earn targets. I have argued for a long time that the position gets priced on touchdowns when it should be priced on routes, and I assumed a format built to reward receptions would show that in the valuations.
It barely does. Two places on the overall board. That is what a half-point premium buys the top of the position.
The bonus scales. The effect stays small.
First thing to rule out: maybe half a point is simply too small a lever. So check a full point, which is the aggressive end of what leagues actually run.

It scales cleanly. Double the bonus, roughly double the movement. So the small effect is not an artefact of a small bonus, and there is no threshold further up where the format suddenly starts mattering. A full-point premium still moves the position about three places.
Look at who moves, not how much
The average is the least interesting number on this page. A reception bonus pays for catches, so it does not lift the position evenly. It widens the gap between tight ends who see volume and tight ends who get there on touchdowns and yards per catch.

The negative movement in that table is the part to take away. A tight end can be worth less in a TE premium league than in the same league without the bonus, because everyone around him gained more than he did. Value is relative. A bonus that every tight end receives is not a bonus to tight ends.
So the format does something real, and it is not the thing it is sold as. It does not make the position more valuable. It re-sorts the position by target share, which is a change I happen to want, but it is a change of order rather than of level, and I was wrong about which one it was.
What actually moves tight end value
If you want the position to matter, the lever is not in the scoring settings. It is in the roster settings, and almost nobody frames it that way.
A second required tight end seat drains the pool the way a superflex seat drains quarterbacks. It moves replacement level, and replacement level is what sets the price. A per-catch bonus scales a thin pool up together and leaves the ordering roughly where it started.
Check which one your league runs before drafting as though tight end is scarce. One of those settings makes it scarce. The other one mostly makes it noisier.
What to do with this on draft day
Do not move the position up your board. That is the first thing, and it is the reverse of most premium-league advice. A full point per catch lifts tight end by 0.6% against the field. Your board barely registers that the setting is on.
Move players within the position instead. The premium re-sorts the tier, and the re-sort is several times larger than the lift. Trey McBride gains 4.6% and 8 places. Kyle Pitts gains 4.4% and 8. Tucker Kraft loses 3.6% and falls 15, in the same league, under the same setting.
That comparison is the whole draft-day instruction. A bonus paid per catch pays the tight ends who catch passes and quietly charges the ones who reach the end zone, because their production was never coming from volume to begin with. Look at where a tight end got his points before you pay a premium price for him in a premium league.
Then check the setting itself, because half a point and a full point are two different leagues: 1.2% and 2 places at 0.5, 2.4% and 3.3 places at 1.0. Both are small. Only one of them is the league you are in.
What this does not show
One league shape, and it is the one the setting is usually argued about in: 12 teams, PPR, one quarterback. A premium behaves differently where the lineup starts two tight ends, and nothing here measures that.
The re-sort is measured on the top ten tight ends by HexValue rather than on the whole position. Below them the percentages get large because the denominator gets small, which describes the denominator rather than the change.
