Four league championships in the book, every one from an era before the trophy had a name on it. Quinshon Judkins runs angry and Harold Fannin Jr. has been a revelation, in front of a defensive line that ruins afternoons. The Dawg Pound never needed a reason to turn up and is not about to start.

The case for the 2026 season

Written before Week 1, and not revisited. Written 2026-08-21, before a single snap. Every result, injury and trade after kickoff is missing from it. Read it as a record of the argument rather than as a current one.

The youngest roster in football by a distance, the second-best pass defense, and a quarterback slot at 34.8

Cleveland rate 62 for roster strength, 32 of 32, with nobody inside the league's top 50. That is the counter-argument and I am putting it first because this market does not read past a case that hides it. What sits beside it: a value-weighted age of 23.1 that is 1 of 32 and therefore the youngest in football, 82.5% of the club's rated talent held by players under twenty-five, and a pass defense ranked 2 of 32. The quarterback slot rates 34.8.

The counter-argument, in full

0 players in the league's top 25. 0 in the top 50. 2 in the top 100. The highest-rated player here is Quinshon Judkins at 89.5, 58 of 457. Pass efficiency 0.59, rush efficiency 0.67, quarterback input 0.45, tempo 0.81 against a league average of one, which is the slowest kind of offense a club can run when it is not winning.

The quarterback slot carries 28% of the club figure and rates 34.8. There is no arrangement of the other six slots that recovers from that, and I am not going to build one. Anyone who tells you the roster figure is unfair to this club is asking you to ignore the position this city has spent twenty-five years unable to fill.

Now the part the number cannot see

The value-weighted age is 23.1 and the plain roster age is 23.7, against a league mean of 26. 82.5% of everything the model rates here belongs to players under twenty-five. That is not the youngest roster by a little. It is the youngest roster in football and the margin is not close.

Quinshon Judkins rates 89.5 at 22. Harold Fannin Jr. rates 89.4 at 22. KC Concepcion rates 74.1 at 21. I believe a roster's age curve is the most under-read number on a team page, and this is the page that makes the argument for me: three of the four best players here are twenty-two or younger.

The defense, which is the actual case

Pass defense z-scores at 1.45, 2 of 32, second in the league. Rush defense ranks 16. Team Power reads 72, 20 of 32, which is thirteen places above where the skill players rate and is that defense doing the lifting.

I think a defense can carry an offense further than the discourse allows, and this market has the evidence for it in living memory. What a defense cannot do is carry a quarterback slot rating 34.8 through a season, and I am sceptical of the veteran-signing answer to that question for reasons this city does not need rehearsed. The second-best pass defense in football buys this club games it has no business in. It does not buy it a February.

What the case actually is

Strength of schedule ranks 31 of 32 counting easiest first, which is one of the hardest slates in the league, and 16 of 17 games are outdoors, 31 of 32 for indoor games and therefore among the fewest. The bye is week 11. None of that helps.

So here is the honest version. The roster figure of 62 is correct and it is measuring this season, in which this club is 32 of 32 and the schedule is hard and the quarterback slot is what it is. The age curve is measuring a different season, one where 82.5% of the rated talent has had two more years, and no page on this site can tell you what that is worth. I write about the future here because the present has rarely repaid the attention, and I would rather say that plainly than dress up a bottom-two roster as a contender.

What this page does not measure. HexMetrics measures fantasy-relevant offensive production. It does not measure defense beyond a pair of z-scores, line play beyond a rank, or coaching and special teams at all. A franchise record on a club page is history rather than a forecast: no rating is derived from it, and there are no playoff odds or win totals anywhere on this site.
