The case for the 2026 season

Written before Week 1, and not revisited. Written 2026-08-21, before a single snap. Every result, injury and trade after kickoff is missing from it. Read it as a record of the argument rather than as a current one.

Last in the league by roster strength, fourth youngest, and one player who is genuinely elite

Miami rate 62.8 for roster strength, 31 of 32, which is last. That is the whole headline and there is no reading of it that improves. What sits underneath is more interesting than the number: a value-weighted age of 24.4 that is 4 of 32 counting youngest first, 53.5% of the club's rated talent held by players under twenty-five, and De'Von Achane at 98.1, 18 of 457. One elite player, a very young room, and a projected defense the model puts 32 of 32.

The speed is real and it is measured

De'Von Achane rates 98.1 against other backs, 18 in a pool of 457 rated skill players, and he is the only Miami player inside the league's top 50. The scheme is spread, pass rate 0.53, tempo 0.91 against a league average of one. That is a club built to run out of the huddle and go, and it has exactly one player the model considers a weapon.

I have argued for years that separation and yards after the catch beat contested-catch reputation, and that the gap between those two is where receiver rankings go wrong. The problem here is not that the model has the wrong receivers ranked in the wrong order. It is that the first receiver rates 60.3 and the second rates 55.5, and neither number needs a philosophical argument to interpret.

The quarterback slot is the whole gap

71.9 at quarterback, and that slot carries 28% of the club figure. Every other club in this division rates higher there. That single number is most of the distance between 62.8 and the league median of 75.6, and pretending otherwise would be the kind of thing this market says in September.

Run the seven slots: 71.9, 98.1, 17.5, 60.3, 55.5, 57.4, 43.3. One of those is a top-twenty player in football. The rest are a list of men the model has no strong opinion about, and a starting seven with no strong opinions in it is how a club finishes 31 of 32.

What the youth is actually worth

53.5% of the club's rated talent is held by players under twenty-five and the plain roster age is 24. Against a league mean age of 26 that is a genuinely young room, and young rooms are the only kind that get better without spending anything.

But I treat a September sample as the least informative month of the year, and by the same standard I have to treat a projection off a young roster as the least informative kind of projection. Youth is an argument about the year after this one. It is not an argument about this one, and I am not going to run it as though it were.

The claim, sized correctly

The defense is where this stops being a comfortable argument. The forward composite reads -2.48, which is 32 of 32 and therefore last in the league. Pass defense ranks 26 and rush defense 23. Team Power, which blends both sides of the ball, reads 67 and ranks 22 of 32, which is better than the roster figure and is being carried by scheme rather than by players.

So the honest case is a small one. This is a warm-weather roster and I believe those are systematically underrated in the first half of a season and overrated in the second, which means the version of Miami that shows up in October will look better than this page does. The schedule ranks 9 of 32 counting easiest first and the bye falls in week 6. A fast start is available. A Super Bowl is not, and a market that has stopped pretending about December should not start pretending in August.
