The case for the 2026 season
The strongest skill group in the league on this measurement, behind the twenty-ninth-ranked line
New England rate 81.7 for roster strength, which is 2 of 32 and therefore first. The number is built on a quarterback rating 96.0 at his position and a receiver at 98.0, both inside the league's top 100, with two backs above 86.8 behind them. Against that: an offensive line ranked 29 of 32 and a Team Power of 75, 19 of 32. The skill group is not the constraint here and has not been the thing this market argues about.
Grade the roster as it was assembled
Seven slots, in the order the club figure weights them. Quarterback 96.0, first receiver 98.0, first back 88.2, tight end 78.4, second receiver 63.6, flex 27.9, second back 86.8. No slot below fifty. That is the entire reason this club rates where it does, and it is a roster-construction outcome rather than a talent windfall.
12 players are rated here against a league average of 14.3, so this is not a deep roster in the counting sense. It is an evenly built one. Six clubs carry more rated players and every one of them rates lower, which is what happens when a figure stops rewarding a long tail and starts asking who actually plays.
The asset this club is currently holding
A quarterback rating 96.0 against other quarterbacks, 28 of 457, at 24 years old. My standing position is that a young quarterback on a rookie contract is the single most valuable asset in professional football and that most rosters waste the window. The window is open here and it is being used, which after the last several years is worth putting in writing without a qualifier attached.
Pass efficiency reads 0.89, the highest of the 32 clubs. I read efficiency before volume, always, and I think target counts are the most over-quoted number in the sport, so that figure carries more weight with me than anything else on the page. The quarterback rating input in the scheme profile reads 0.5, which is a different measurement on a different basis, and the gap between those two is the honest uncertainty in this case.
The acquisition I would have graded differently
A.J. Brown rates 98.0, 19 of 457, and is 29. I am sceptical of veteran receiver acquisitions as a fix for a passing offense, on the view that the problem is usually upstream of the catch, and this roster is a clean test of exactly that: the line ranks 29 of 32, which is as far upstream as it gets.
So the model and I disagree, and the model is holding the better hand at the moment. It has priced a receiver room that rates 98.0 and 63.6 at the two starting spots and it does not care what I think the mechanism is. If the line holds, my objection was noise. If it does not, 98.0 at receiver will not save a season, and neither of us will have to wait long to find out which.
The claim, and its stated limit
Strength of schedule ranks 2 of 32 counting easiest first, the second-softest slate in football. 15 of 17 games are outdoors and the bye falls in week 11. The value-weighted age is 26.7, 20 of 32, with 35.4% of the rated talent under twenty-five.
The case is that the two hardest things to acquire, a quarterback and a first receiver, are both already here and both rate inside the top 100 of 457 players, and the thing that is missing is a line, which is the thing a club can buy. The case against it is on the same page and I am not going to bury it: Team Power reads 75 at 19 of 32 because it reads the line and the defense as well as the skill players, and it is describing a club that is good rather than one that is finished. Both numbers are correct. They are measuring different halves of a football team.
