The case for the 2026 season
The two defensive numbers on this page disagree, and the argument lives in the gap
Pass defense ranks 32 of 32, which is last. The forward-looking defensive composite ranks 7 of 32, which is seventh. Those are the same unit measured two ways, one backward and one forward, and the entire Jets case is a bet on which of them is describing this season. Roster strength reads 65.7, 28 of 32, with Breece Hall at 94.6 the highest-rated player here.
Yes, we know
The quarterback slot rates 50.5. It carries 28% of the club figure, the heaviest weight on the page, and it is the reason a roster with two genuinely good players finishes 28 of 32. You did not need a model to tell you that and neither did I, but it is nice to have it written down by something with no feelings about it.
Team Power reads 45, 31 of 32. Pass efficiency 0.56, quarterback input 0.58, a line at 25 of 32. I am sceptical of any argument that rests on a quarterback taking a step forward, having heard it more than most, so this case will not rest on one. It rests on the two numbers at the top of the page that cannot both be right.
The two defenses
The backward number is -2.14 against the pass, which is 32 of 32 and is exactly as bad as it looks. The forward composite reads 0.75 and ranks 7, which is a top-ten unit. One of those is a record of what happened and the other is a projection of what happens next, and the club's whole season sits in the distance between them.
I think a strong defense buys a mediocre offense about three wins and no more, and that the market reliably forgets the second half of that sentence. So take the forward number at face value, grant the three wins, and you have a club that is better than it was and still not a contender. That is not pessimism, it is arithmetic, and it is the kind of arithmetic this fanbase does before breakfast.
The position nobody here talks about
Kenyon Sadiq rates 65.5 at tight end and the slot carries 13% of the club figure, the same weight as the first running back. Tight end usage in the scheme profile reads low. My standing view is that the position group least discussed in a market is the one that actually decides its seasons, and in this market that is not a close contest.
Meanwhile the two players everyone does talk about are the two the model likes: Breece Hall at 94.6 and Garrett Wilson at 91.9. Both are inside the league's top 100. 2 of them is inside the top 50. The club is not short of talent so much as short of it in six of the seven places it is counted.
The claim, made carefully so it can be held to
The roster is the fifth youngest in the league at a value-weighted 24.7, 5 of 32, with 50.5% of its rated talent under twenty-five. Strength of schedule ranks 16 of 32 counting easiest first, which is the middle, and the bye is week 13.
Here is the case, and it is deliberately small so that nobody can enjoy taking it apart in November: if the forward defensive number is the real one, this is a club that wins more than it loses and is unpleasant to play in a cold building in December, and the young half of the roster is a year closer to mattering. That is it. That is the whole thing. Anyone who tells you the rest of it is describing a quarterback slot that reads 50.5, and you are allowed to stop listening at that point.
