The case for the 2026 season
First in Team Power, best run defense in the league by a distance, and a twenty-third-rated skill group
Seattle rate 99 for Team Power, 1 of 32, which is first in football. The run defense z-scores at 2.33, 1 of 32, and the margin over second is the largest gap at the top of any measurement on this site. The skill group rates 69.7, 24 of 32. Those two numbers share no inputs and they are twenty-two places apart, which makes this the widest disagreement between the two headline measurements anywhere in the league.
The defense, which is the reason for the first number
Rush defense 2.33 at 1 of 32. Pass defense 1.18 at 5. Forward-looking composite 1.14 at 5. Three constructions, all top five, no disagreement between them worth arguing about.
Defensive improvement is the most predictive offseason signal there is and I read it before anything else, so this is where I would start on any club and it happens to be where this club is strongest. Team Power weights the defense at a bit under half and the offense at a bit over, which is how a club with a twenty-third-rated skill group finishes first overall.
The skill group, stated without softening
Jaxon Smith-Njigba rates 99.6, 7 of 457, and is the only Seattle player inside the league's top 50. Behind him: quarterback 65.2, first back 86.8, tight end 61.7, second receiver 58.3, flex 50.8, second back 45.0.
One elite player and six ordinary ones. The quarterback slot at 65.2 carries 28% of the club figure, which is most of the distance to the top ten on its own, and pass efficiency at 0.84 is a top-three figure in football achieved with that rating. The offense works better than its personnel rates, and the honest way to say that is that the design is carrying it.
Balance, which I do not accept as a virtue
The scheme is labelled balanced at a 0.52 rush rate with tempo at 0.99 against a league average of one. The line ranks 22 of 32.
I am sceptical of balanced-offense framing as a virtue, on the view that balance is often the absence of a strength rather than the presence of two. A 0.52 rush rate behind the twenty-second-ranked line is not a philosophy, and the club's actual strength is a receiver at 99.6 and a defense in the top five three ways. Those are the two things worth building around and neither of them is balance.
The crowd, measured rather than romanced
14 of 17 games are outdoors and 3 indoors, 28 of 32. Strength of schedule ranks 13 of 32 counting easiest first, which is the middle. The value-weighted age is 25.5, 12 of 32, with 54.5% of the rated talent under twenty-five, the fourth-highest share in the league. The bye is week 11.
Home-field advantage is a genuinely measurable edge here and it is nowhere near as large as this market believes, and I have said that in years when saying it was unpopular. It is worth something and it is not worth a seed. What is worth a seed is the number at the top of this page: first in Team Power, the best run defense in football by the widest margin on the site, a top-five pass defense, and a receiver rated seventh of 457. The skill group ranks 24 and that is a real limit rather than a quibble. A club wins a Super Bowl from here by making the games low-scoring, and this is the roster to do it with.
