The dynasty that ran through this building changed how the sport is coached, and half the league still runs some descendant of it. Christian McCaffrey does absolutely everything, George Kittle blocks like it is a personal grudge and enjoys it visibly, and Brock Purdy keeps proving people wrong. Ask anybody at Levi’s why a run worked and the answer involves the backside linebacker.

How roster strength is built: the seven slots behind 79.1

HexScore rates a player against others at his own position, so the seven below are not added up: each is weighted by what its slot is worth to an offence, and the weights are in the last column.

The case for the 2026 season

Written before Week 1, and not revisited. Written 2026-08-21, before a single snap. Every result, injury and trade after kickoff is missing from it. Read it as a record of the argument rather than as a current one.

The easiest schedule in football, the third-best line, and the oldest value in the league

San Francisco have the easiest schedule in football at 1 of 32, the third-best offensive line at 3, and the oldest value-weighted roster in the league at 28.3, 32 of 32. Roster strength reads 79.1, 9 of 32, with Christian McCaffrey at 99.2, 10 of 457. The mechanism matters more than the outcome here, so the mechanism comes first.

The system, before the players

A zone-run scheme at a 0.46 rush rate behind a line ranked 3 of 32, with tight-end usage the profile calls high and a pass efficiency of 0.77. Rush efficiency reads 0.64, which is lower than the line rank suggests and is the first genuinely surprising number on this page.

I believe a zone-run system produces interchangeable back production and that ranking the backs individually misses the point. This page ranks them individually: Christian McCaffrey at 99.2 and Kaelon Black at 16.4, an eighty-five point gap inside a system designed to make that gap small. Either the system is not doing what it used to or the model is reading a workload rather than a player, and I lean to the second without being able to prove it here.

The receivers, and scheme-created separation

Deebo Samuel Sr. at 78.3 and De'Zhaun Stribling at 70.6, with the flex at 69.1 and a tight end at 87.8. 1 player inside the league's top 50, which for a club this well regarded is the number people will find hardest to believe.

I am sceptical of receiver valuations that do not account for scheme-created separation, and this offense manufactures more of it than any other in football. A model that reads production credits the player; a coordinator who watches the tape credits the design. Both are describing the same catch. What the page can say is that the first receiver slot carries 17% of the club figure and this club fills it at 78.3, which is good rather than elite.

The quarterback, rated higher than the market rates him

Brock Purdy rates 89.1, 61 of 457, and the slot carries 28% of the club figure. The scheme profile's quarterback input reads 0.78.

That is the highest player rating in this division at the position and it is the least discussed fact about it. Say he is a product of the system if you like. This market says that about players as a description rather than an insult, and a product of that system throwing behind that line on that schedule is worth more than a better player somewhere else.

The thing this market actually worries about

The value-weighted age is 28.3, 32 of 32, the oldest in football, with 15% of the rated talent under twenty-five. The second-back slot rates 16.4 and the flex rates 69.1, so the depth behind the two most load-bearing players here is thin.

The hardest thing to sustain in this offense is health, not quality, and I price it that way. Defensively the backward pair reads 25 and 17 of 32 with a forward composite at 29, which is the bottom four and is the one measurement on this page that is unambiguously bad. Team Power reads 81, 13 of 32.

So the case is precise. The easiest schedule in football, the third-best line, a top-ten skill player, a quarterback the model rates higher than the discourse does, and 5 of 17 indoors. Against it: the oldest roster in the league, a bottom-four projected defense, and no replacement for either of the two men this offense is built around. That is a contender with a specific and well-known failure mode, and everyone here has watched it happen.

It does not measure defense beyond a pair of z-scores, line play beyond a rank, or coaching and special teams at all.
