NFL Kickoff Weather

Every game on the week 8 slate, roughest conditions first, ordered on wind over 12mph, precipitation over 40% and anything below freezing. 14 games: 11 outdoors and 3 under a roof, where kickoff weather never applies. All 11 outdoor readings are seasonal samples rather than forecasts.

SeasonalNot a forecast: each reading is what the sky was doing at that venue on the same calendar date one year ago. Live forecasts replace it once a game comes inside the roughly 16 day horizon.

How to read this. The order is a reading order, not a projection. A game sits at the top because its wind is over 12mph, its chance of precipitation is over 40%, or it is below freezing, which are the same two wind and precipitation thresholds the in-league matchup analysis uses, plus temperature, which that model does not weigh at all. Indoor venues are listed rather than dropped, because "the roof is closed" is a real answer to what the weather is doing to a lineup, and they carry no reading because there is nothing to read. A seasonal sample is what the sky did at that venue on the same date one year ago; it is a reanalysis, and nothing on this page presents one as a forecast.
